Dzaleka Refugee Camp: Malawi

The Dzaleka refugee camp is located in the Dowa District of Malawi, near the town of Dzaleka. The camp was established in 1994 to provide a haven for refugees fleeing political persecution and violence in the Great Lakes region of Africa, particularly Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The camp's population has grown to over 30,000, making it one of the largest refugee camps in Africa.

Our Partner Organization: Adonai Pentecostal Schools

In a refugee camp such as Dzaleka, there are usually no other options for education other than a government school run by the United Nations. Although these school do the best they can, they are often overcrowded and unable to provide the attention and resources necessary for a quality education. Schools like Adonai, help give refugee parents another alternative and an opportunity to give their children a better education; which often proves to be the most valuable resource in a refugee camp.

Adonai is free for any vulnerable student or orphan to attend. Their greatest financial needs include; staffing including teachers and security and buying adequate resources for students such as books, computers and uniforms.

Kule 2 Refugee Camp: Ethiopia

Quick Facts

Our Partner Organization: The Evangelical Covenant Church of South Sudan and Ethiopia

Kule 2 is a refugee camp located in western Ethiopia, near the border with South Sudan. The camp was established to provide shelter and assistance to South Sudanese refugees who have fled conflict and violence in their home country.

As of 2021, the camp is home to thousands of refugees, including families, children, and vulnerable individuals who are in need of humanitarian aid and support. The camp is managed by the Ethiopian government, in partnership with various international organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Thrive International visited Kule 2 in October of 2022 and saw firsthand the need of unaccompanied minors in the camp. We met a family of 5 (ages 7-16; pictured above) who lost their mother to illness in 2021. Their current hut has no door which allows snakes to enter at night and the children sleep on the ground with soiled blankets, making them vulnerable to disease.

When you give to unaccompanied minors, you are literally helping to put a roof over their heads and providing something as essential as a front door and clean bedding.
