Washington, the third-largest refugee-receiving state, boasts a vibrant and diverse refugee and immigrant community, consistently ranking among the top resettlement states in the nation. Over the past decade, the global refugee crisis has more than doubled, surpassing 100 million in total displacement by 2022, each represents someone who has been compelled to abandon their homes due to uncontrollable circumstances. As of May 2023, over 110 million individuals worldwide have been forcibly displaced, marking the largest annual increase in UNHCR's history, driven by conflicts like the war in Ukraine. The current scarcity of refugee housing options in Spokane, coupled with the absence of permanent nonprofit-owned housing, underscores the need for sustainable housing solutions and the urgency of our efforts.
